How To: Capsule Wardrobe

Shop the look: White Tee, Jeans

  • Quality over Quantity: Invest in staple pieces. For example, I like to go to the B.P. section at Nordstrom and get basic cami's and tee's instead of places like Forever 21. Yes, you will pay a little more, but they will last a lot longer. Same thing with shoes; my favorite places to shop are Nordstrom or Steve Madden; they are a little pricer, but you pay for what you get. Another thing you really want to invest in is jeans. They can be so hard to find, and if you're uber picky like me, it can get frustrating. I am 5'1" and pretty petite, so finding ones that are short enough and don't bunch around my ankles is a s-t-r-u-g-g-l-e. Recently, I decided to go into Abercrombie (yes, the kids version) and try some of their jeans. Lo and behold, I found my dream pair and bought them in every wash they had. (They are the one's I am wearing here).
  • Rule of 3: Something that I actually learned from Alex Garza and it has saved my life. When you're out shopping think of three different ways you can style the item. If you can't think of three separate ways to wear it, don't buy it. This helps eliminate the problem of wearing it once and forgetting about it.
  • Pick a color palette and stick to it: I am a neutrals kind of gal so I'm sure you can guess my color palette (white, black, grey, tan, blush pink, and maybe some blue). When I'm out shopping I tend to buy items within this color scheme; therefore, it's a whole lot easier to pair things together when getting ready.
  • Texture: A fun way to spice up an outfit, while sticking with your color palette, is adding in texture. For example, instead of buying a basic tan tee, I found a faux suede camel colored tee and paired it with jeans and a leather jacket. It made the look so much more interesting and added a touch of sass! Another fun way to add texture and change up a look is with leather leggings. They can be styled so many different ways and look super chic.
  • Accessories to add color and personal style: Now, this is where the magic happens...your color palette goes out the window, rule of three doesn't apply, and you get to have FUN! This can be done with a fun cardigan, scarf, statement jewelry or even shoes. Let your personality shine through the patterns, colors, and styles. This is where you can step out of your comfort zone or try a new trend without breaking the bank. A few of my favorite places to get fun pieces to change up a look are Francesca's, Nordstrom, Charming Charlie, and Target.
